Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative

SYVPI is funded by the City of Seattle and is a network of organizations that collaborate together to support, serve, and advocate for about 1,000 youth. To be eligible, youth:

  • must be between the ages of 12-17 when they are enrolled 
  • must live or go to school in the city of Seattle, specifically in the SE (south end), CD (central district), or SW (west side)

Youth also must fit one or more of the following critera:

  • may have been convicted multiple times and released from supervision OR is under minimal supervision and is at risk to re-offend
  • may have been arrested for crime(s) that do not meet the juvenile detention intake criteria and was released
  • may have been suspended or expelled from school for violence and/or has a history of truancy issues (absent 9 or more days per semester)
  • may be gang-involved

They may also have some of the following presenting issues:

  • Low academic achievement
  • Negative/unhealthy relationships (peers and intimate partners)
  • Alcohol and/or drug use
  • Unstable family/home life (incarcerated parents/family, in foster care, unstable housing or homeless, etc.)
  • Mental Health (depression, anxiety, difficulty coping with challenges and/or controlling impulses, etc.)
  • Lack of support network
  • Aggression and/or carrying a weapon
  • On probation or court involved
  • Not employed or involved in other community services
