Powerful Voices 2004 Luncheon

Knowledge Passion  Action

Thursday, October 14, 2004

Our annual luncheon fundraiser was held on October 14th  in downtown Seattle, where nearly 500 community members gathered to celebrate the accomplishments and support the goals of Powerful Voices and the girls we serve.   This year's event raised over $80,000 -- vital funding to sustain the programs this year and help grow the organization next year.   The theme Knowledge. Passion. Action. weaved its way throughout the program, reminding us all that we have the power to raise our voices and create meaningful change in the world.    Keynote speaker Pramila Jayapal, activist, author, and executive director of Hate Free Zone Campaign of Washington , drove home the importance of supporting organizations like Powerful Voices that promote the growth and development of girls by sharing her experience that a community is only as strong as its women.  Perhaps the most moving portion of the luncheon was a spoken word performance by four of the girls in our programs around the importance of knowledge, passion, and action in each of their lives.  Fifteen-year-old Chioma Amaefule said in her presentation, "...My actions.  I try.  From the knowledge I've obtained, yet something is missing.  It's passion and desire for change.  If one has knowledge and doesn't do anything with it or to it, then in general, are they not saying,'You know what? Screw it.'"
Many thanks to everyone that contributed to making this year's event a huge success!
