Highlights
of our 2003 Annual Luncheon
Who
are you to a Girl? Much More than you Think.
The Powerful Voices 3rd Annual Luncheon, held Thursday October 16th
at the Seattle Westin, was a success by many measures. Thank you to
the over 600 attendees who came together to learn about Powerful Voices,
to hear remarks from our distinguished guest Melinda French Gates,
and to honor the young women Powerful Voices serves. The event renewed
a profound sense of hope to the vision of Powerful Voices: that strong
girls become strong women.
Our
keynote speaker, Melinda French Gates, Co-founder of the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, reminded us how important it is to support a young
woman in finding her voice. "How does a girl become strong? How
does she enact change? How does she grow into a strong woman? It begins
with a step that sounds simple, but isn't. She finds her voice" remarked
Gates.
Four girls from our programs shared their voices through a spoken word
performance that reinforced our commitment to supporting them, along
with all the other girls in our lives, in becoming strong women. We
were asked to ask ourselves: Who am I to a girl? And we discovered
the answer is simple and profound: I am hope. I am love. I am everything.
In other words, I am so much more than I think.
The
event raised $90,000 to support our two programs serving adolescent
girls. "We couldn't be more grateful to everyone who helped make
our luncheon a success. reflected Julie Edsforth, Executive Director. "Every
dollar raised at our luncheon will go directly to support over 700
girls we serve each year in middle schools and juvenile detention".
