Tobacco Prevention Expands in STAGES
June 2004
Seattle & King County Public Health has awarded Powerful Voices
$15,600 to strengthen and expand the tobacco prevention workshops that
we offer through STAGES. With support from Public Health since September
2000, Powerful Voices has been offering Kick Butts I, a tobacco prevention
workshop for young women in the King County Juvenile Detention facility.
In 2003, Public Health funding allowed us to offer Kick Butts Part
II alongside Kick Butts I, providing a more direct focus on tobacco cessation
readiness. With this new award, PV will enhance our in-detention
tobacco awareness workshop and initiate a post-release component to Kick
Butts. Peer education and drop-in groups will assist girls who
are released from detention to increase their awareness and decrease their
use of tobacco products.
